Cloud Storage Titans becoming easily exchangeable – Amazon S3, Microsoft Azure and Rackspace

The enterprise cloud storage pricing war between Amazon S3, Microsoft Azure and other BaaS provider just accelerated even more. CloudRail (https://cloudrail.com), a leading API integration provider, has released a unified API which allows developers to seamless switch between providers in minutes. This eliminates the main technical barrier which prevented ISVs and application builders from switching to another inexpensive offering.

With it’s new Unified API for Amazon S3, Microsoft Azure, Rackspace and Backblaze, CloudRail allows developers to integrate all these services via a single API. This makes the services consistent, easily exchangeable, and low maintenance. The German based startup has set out to fundamentally change the way API integrations are done for developers. Instead of manual one by one integrations, CloudRail bundles multiple services into a single API and delivered via a SDK. Besides professional cloud storage providers, CloudRail offers interfaces for social networks, consumer cloud storage, payment, point of interest and many more. The offering allows developers to do integrations significantly faster and without running into vendor lock-ins.

“We think it is fundamentally wrong how integrations are done today. APIs should be provider agnostic to let developers integrate a set of functions like the ability to store files in the cloud rather than a specific vendor name. APIs today are all different even though they provide exactly the same functions. With CloudRail we are standardizing APIs so developers can freely choose and switch providers”, says Felix Kollmar, CEO of CloudRail.

Besides simplified integration and switchability, CloudRail provides API Change Management features that keeps all integrations up-to-date thus solving another well known problem amongst developers: Changing APIs. The solution constantly monitors all customer integrations for API changes. Once a problem is detected CloudRail updates the integration and automatically notifies the developer. Due to a consistent, unified API, all the developer needs to do is update the CloudRail SDK to it’s latest version.

The new interface for cloud storage providers is available as of today. CloudRail is free for non commercial projects. Professional offerings start at 19€ per month.

Founded in 2013, CloudRail’s vision is to revolutionize the way APIs are being integrated. With it’s universal API approach, the start-up is significantly simplifying integrations which leads to a more connected world. Headquartered in Mannheim, Germany and with an office in San Francisco, CA, CloudRail powers reliable integrations which are used by millions of people every day.

Oct 13 2016: Dropbox Owns Cloud Storage on Mobile - 64% of users, 80% of API Activity

Dropbox Owns Cloud Storage on Mobile – 64% of users, 80% of API Activity

A new report by Unified API integration leader CloudRail shows that Dropbox leads the consumer cloud storage market with 63.8%, ahead of Google Drive, OneDrive and Box of all users choosing their service.

CloudRail, a leader in API integration management solutions for app developers, released a new report analyzing the millions of connections made to cloud storage providers by users from CloudRail powered mobile apps. Dropbox is the clear leader with 63.8% of all users choosing this provider. It is followed by Google Drive with 17.8%, OneDrive with 11.6% and Box with 6.8%.

Dropbox 63.8%
Google Drive 17.8%
OneDrive 11.6%
Box 6.8%

Cementing its leadership position further, the report shows that Dropbox users are the most active generating 80.8% of all API activity from mobile applications.

Dropbox 80.8%
Google Drive 14.5%
OneDrive 4%
Box 0.7%

The report measures the distribution of all cloud storage users among Dropbox, Google Drive, Microsoft OneDrive and Box. The distribution is calculated by analyzing the usage of API integrations among CloudRail powered mobile apps. This means that the four analyzed providers are integrated in a 3rd party app to provide additional functionality like e.g. access of files for modification in the app or backup of app data. The user of the app has the free choice which of the four providers to use. Considering that apps are usually accessing data which is already stored within the cloud provider, this is a clear indicator which provider users use for other purposes as well.
CloudRail provides products and solutions for software developers to easily integrate all four cloud storage providers via a unified, single API. Code once, access all. Developers and enterprise customers from all industries rely on CloudRail to power the integrations in their apps.

Sep 28 2016: Companies Destroy the API Economy They Create

Companies Destroy the API Economy They Create

Application programming interfaces (APIs) are the foundation of a connected world. These interfaces are used to connect cloud services and applications from different vendors to create a common ecosystem.

The problem is that companies regularly change their APIs. Dropbox just forced 300,000 app developers to migrate to a new API version. Every app using the Dropbox API, in which a developer is not willing to invest a week of costly development time, will break. Unfortunately this use case is the rule rather than the exception.
On the one hand companies provide an open API to support a connected world and on the other hand destroy it by regularly changing them.

CloudRail (https://cloudrail.com), whose API integration solutions for apps are used by millions of users every day, has built a solution to this problem. Called API Change Management, the product automatically identifies API changes and maintains them for app developers to keeps critical integrations working. It helps developers to keep track of API changes and let them upgrade their integrations in less than 10 minutes instead of days, resulting in significant development costs savings but also keeps their customers happy with stable apps. Now developers have more control over their apps that ever before.

“I’m frustrated that companies are constantly changing their APIs. While I understand it is to improve the overall integration between my app and their service, it is done in a way that costs me time and money” says Lam-Thao Ha from cm3p development. “Multiply a week fix across the nine APIs I integrate, it has an impact on my profit margin. Finally a company built tools focus on me the developer and my needs.”

The CloudRail solution is freely available for open source and non commercial apps. The Commercial offering starts at 19€ per month.

Aug 23 2016: CloudRail Universal API Now Available for Swift Developers

CloudRail Universal API Now Available for Swift Developers

Mannheim, Germany – Integrate multiple APIs via a single API? This is now possible for Swift developers on iOS. The German based startup CloudRail (https://cloudrail.com) extends its API Integration Solution with a Swift library.

CloudRail addresses the increasing problem of handling API integrations for software developers. The goal of the company is to increase the speed to integrate a service into e.g. a smartphone app significantly. Core of the solution is a software library which abstracts over multiple web APIs and bundles them into a single, universal API. For example CloudRail lets developers integrate Cloud Storage providers like Dropbox, Google Drive and OneDrive via a unified interface. So the function upload() works exactly the same for Dropbox as it does for Google Drive and Box.

“We see developers integrate a whole category of services in a few hours. With traditional methods, we would be talking about weeks”, says Felix Kollmar, co-founder and CEO of CloudRail.

CloudRail currently offers universal APIs for the areas of Cloud Storage, Social Networks, Payment, Points of Interest, SMS and Email. In addition to the abstraction layers, the startup also handles API changes, like what recently happened to the Dropbox API. CloudRail’s solution does the hard work for the developer and updates the integration of the changed API without requiring any code changes within the app itself.

An important fact about the solution is that no data ever passes through a CloudRail server. Therefore the CloudRail solution doesn’t add an additional Single Point of Failure and has no negative implications on performance or security like traditional middleware products. Along with the new Swift version, CloudRail offers solutions for Objective-C, Android, Node.js and Java developers.

CloudRail is free without any limitation on number of apps or integrated APIs. The paid version gives additional access to a central platform to manage and monitor API integrations. Moreover an enterprise model offers special SLAs concerning API updates and Long-Term-Support.

Nov 5 2015: CLOUDRAIL - the “UNIVERSAL API TO EVERYTHING”

CLOUDRAIL – the “UNIVERSAL API TO EVERYTHING”

Integration to any cloud service and smart device via one single API

Mannheim, Germany – CloudRail, a visionary in the connected economy, has launched the “Universal API to Everything”. This solution enables software developers to integrate their applications to all connected smart devices or cloud services via one single API.

APIs (application programming interfaces) allow apps and devices speak to one another. They enable the seamless connectivity that drives the Internet of Everything. But today many developers have become overwhelmed with multiple provider APIs with proprietary data formats and semantics. Each manual integration has become a time consuming task. In addition, providers struggle with making their data available to applications in a simple way and therefore lack developer reach for adoption of their services.

CloudRail has solved these problems. Software developers can now use CloudRail for automatic integration into a broad offering of leading cloud services and smart devices. This includes the Top 10 service based APIs, e.g. Dropbox, Facebook, and connected home devices such as Nest and Philips Hue. Developers can also easily extend the current integrations by adding functionality or creating completely new services to the CloudRail integration database. The result of the CloudRail Universal API solution is a dramatic reduction in the development time required for an integration from days to just hours.

The CloudRail Universal API and integrations are free for developers. CloudRail and the developer community will be creating the interoperability standard platform of the future.

Developers can get started immediately with the API to Everything at http://cloudrail.com/. CloudRail’s Universal API is available for Java and Android developers, with iOS and other platforms coming soon.

Cloudrail Extends Product for Enterprise Application Developers

Release Box.Com Integration and Node.Js SDK

Mannheim, Germany – Integration of on-premise and SaaS applications is the key to realising the true business value of the ‘connected enterprise’. While strides have been made over the past few years, application managers and solution architects are still burdened with heavy manual integrations. Today CloudRail continues to charge ahead in its quest to provide seamless interoperability between applications and cloud service ecosystems with the release of new features to its Universal API product.

First is the addition of Box.com integration to CloudRail’s cloud storage solution, allowing applications developers to integrate Box.com into an application with a few lines of code. All major cloud storage vendors are covered by CloudRail including Google Drive, Dropbox and Microsoft OneDrive.

Second is a broader platform coverage with the release of the CloudRail SDK for Node.js which has quickly become the platform of choice for many commercial applications. Developers can implement the CloudRail Node.js SDK in minutes, thus allowing them to stay focused on creating value added features for their customers.

Key benefits for developers include:

  • Universal interface that allows integrations to cloud storage via a single API
  • Accelerates development cycles and reduces costs
  • Automatic interface updates as provider APIs change
  • No middleware. Direct connect between application and provider API

“CloudRail has been working closely with our developer community to understand their needs and requirements. These new features come directly from those discussions.” said Felix Kollmar, co-founder of CloudRail. “In addition we look forward to expanding the CloudRail platform into other industries like Internet of Things (IoT) and Industry 4.0 where interoperability will be a huge pain point for the developer community.”

Jan 15 2015: CloudRail raises Seed Round to enable true connectivity in the Internet of Things

CloudRail raises Seed Round to enable true connectivity in the Internet of Things

San Francisco, Ca | Mannheim, Germany – The idea of the Internet of Things is that devices, software and cloud services communicate effectively, efficiently and securely across multiple ecosystems, but as of now this is just a dream. Multiple standards, data structures and interfaces from numerous vendors prevent true interoperability.

Today CloudRail, a provider of interoperability solutions, announced a seed investment of €540k from Leonardo Venture, Beteiligungsfonds Wirtschaftsförderung Mannheim GmbH (BWM GmbH) and strategic business angels to solve this problem. The funding will enable the company to expand its existing technology with a new, truly unique approach to solve the IoT interoperability challenge – the CloudRail adaptive universal interface (API) allowing developers to connect to multiple cloud services or devices through one single API. The system manages all conversions between the different communication standards automatically.

“We are excited about the market disruption potential of CloudRail. The number of devices and appliances coming online will expand exponentially over the next years and software developers will need to connect and integrate them to drive value for users. CloudRail has the chance to become the leader in this Interoperability space,” said Marc Langner, Investment Manager at Leonardo Venture.

Existing solutions in the market have been taking a legacy approach by inserting themselves in the middle of the connection. They can’t scale when more devices become ‘smart’, present a security risk to users and are rather costly for customers. All communication between CloudRail enabled apps and devices is in contrary through peer to peer communications. The solution enables devices to connect by providing each endpoint with the ability to communicate, authenticate, and to automatically adapt to the the data formats of each other. CloudRail’s patent-pending technology offers customers unlimited scale, ultimate security and high performance.

Verena Eisenlohr, Managing Director of BWM GmbH, the startup fund of the city of Mannheim, said “One of our key investment objectives is to grow and maintain local entrepreneurial talent in promising growth markets. We are pleased that CloudRail will be headquartered in the city of Mannheim and welcome them to our vibrant startup community.”

CloudRail officially launched an initial Cloud Storage focused interoperability solution in December. Software developers can download and implement this API solution for free from www.CloudRail.com. There is also a premium version of the product for larger environments available.

Nov 11 2014: CloudRail Launches Universal Adaptive API for Cloud Services

For Immediate Release

CloudRail Launches Universal Adaptive API for Cloud Services

Out of box support for Dropbox, Google Drive, and Microsoft OneDrive

November 11, 2014 – CloudRail, a visionary in the connected economy, has launched CloudRail for Cloud Storage Services. By simply integrating the CloudRail adaptive API, software developers can seamlessly connect their application with other services faster and easier than ever before. This “one-to-many” approach works because the CloudRail interface can download special API definitions to automatically adapt to other systems. This dramatically speeds up the development process and allows developers to focus on building stunning software instead of wasting time for integrations.

“Convenience and fast development. The best facility for integrating cloud services through a single API with entire security” stated John Haden of TrooMobile, a leading web and mobile app development company that was part of CloudRail’s early adopter program.

Core features and features of CloudRail include:

*   Easy integrations – connect applications to more services, thus increasing customer reach

*   Faster and cheaper – a single API for connecting to all cloud storage providers

*   Automatic API updates – the CloudRail interface updates with providers change API. Developer maintenance cost go to zero

*   No middleware – conversion happens in the client, so the data never passes through CloudRail. It is a peer-to-peer connection with the provider.

“We spend 50% of our time with integrations, and CloudRail has the potential to reduce this significantly” commented early adopter partner Steve Bernat, CEO of Izonim, a provider of customized software applications to name brand businesses.

The product is available immediately at http://www.cloudrail.com. Developers can get started for free and grow into the Premium and Enterprise offerings with scale.
